wolfenstein 2

They don’t make them like they used to.  That old chestnut holds true for some many wonderful things.  Wolfenstein 2 does a stunning job of reminding us of the good old days of first person shooters.

This is one of the first first person shooters that I’ve played in years that does not include online multiplayer.  The developers have focused 100% on the single player campaign experience and it really shows.  Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus is an incredible game with tight gunplay, wonderful characters and an entertaining story.

What is the gameplay like in Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus?

This is simply what action focused shooters should feel like.  The opening level sees the player maneuver around the inside of a submarine from the confines of a wheelchair.  It has to be said that even this feels incredible.

Death comes often (at least it does to me) whilst playing Wolfenstein 2.  The enemies are fierce, accurate and their weapons pack a punch.  just like all the best games, players are required to play well to progress.

This difficulty provided by the game’s Nazi foes does also grant Wolfenstein some highly successful stealth gameplay.

What is Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus’ story like?

Wolfenstein 2 succeeds in being a heavily action focused game with a strong story.  It moves from over the top violence to intense conversations with a myriad of wonderful characters naturally.

The characters are what truly made Wolfenstein for me.  They gave me the reason to fight.  The reason to violently slam a hatchet into an enemy and the reason to creep through the shadows picking off enemies one at a time.

A particular shoutout here is required for the game’s villain General Engel.  She delights in her evil schemes and helps drive BJ towards his mission objective at all times.  I’ve always been a big fan of truly nasty villains and General Engel is about as full on as it gets.  Not only is she insane and passionate about brutal violence she is also a Nazi.

The Verdict on Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus

Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus is a surprising but wonderful game to release in 2017.  The single player focused gameplay harkens back to older first person shooters but this is anything but old and tired.  Wolfenstein 2 feels fresh with its incredibly shooting gameplay and and stunning collection of characters who keep the action focused and give it meaning.
