Why is the Nintendo 3DS still such a popular console?

The original 3DS came out in 2011.  When comparing games running on it to other consoles at the moment you’d be forgiven for thinking it was outdated and obsolete.  Despite this it remains one of the best consoles money can buy.  Looking on Amazon at the moment the two most popular preordered games are exclusives to the 3DS.  It still clearly is a console of importance despite its lack of power and age.

Why is the Nintendo 3DS still so popular?

One of the many reasons for the 3DS’ popularity and arguably the most important reason is the quality of the games.  When other systems are focusing on HD, 60 FPS, 1080P, VR etc. the Nintendo 3DS focuses on fun games.  Over the past 5 years players have been treated to games such as Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, Monster Hunter, Super Mario 3D World, Fire Emblem, Shovel Knight and Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

Many of these games are pretty old but the Nintendo 3DS still has life in it.  This year games like Animal Crossing: New Leaf is still proving popular and still receiving significant updates and upgrades.  Disney Magical World 2 has recently provided young players with memorable experiences with their favourite Disney characters.  Mario Maker is coming out in December, the huge smash Wii U game that allows you to create your own Mario levels.  The biggest name at the moment is the release of Pokemon Sun and Moon.  This Pokemon series first launched in 1998!  It is still now one of the most popular video game franchises in the world.

How come people keep buying Nintendo 3DS?

This year Microsoft have branched out with the Xbox One S.  Playstation have released the Playstation 4 Slim and and the Playstation 4 Pro console.  These are designed to encourage players to rebuy their consoles for minor upgrades.  Nintendo have been doing this incredibly successfully with the 3DS for years now.  The 2DS, the New Nintendo 3DS, 3DS XL and hundreds of different faceplates for the handheld consoles have kept consumers buying the Nintendo 3DS again and again.  Most people who regularly play their 3DS own more than one 3DS!

With the Nintendo Switch now announced is it time to ditch the 3DS?

No.  Nintendo have recently stated that the Switch is not designed to replace the 3DS.  With hugely popular game series still being created for the 3DS and with an enormous (and still growing) back catalogue of games for it.  The Virtual Console allows you to play older Nintendo games on the 3DS as well as all of the most recent releases.  With new HUGE games such as Pokemon Sun and Moon, Mario Maker 3DS and a recently anounced Pimin game the Nintendo 3DS has a lot more life left in it.

It says a lot that the most popular Nintendo 3DS games hold their value.  Searching eBay for older 3DS titles is stunning.  It can be incredibly tricky to find cheap copies of games such as the Fire Emblem series, a huge sign of its continued popularity.

Nintendo 3DS XOXO

With recent console releases such as Battlefield 1 and Call of Duty Infinite Warfare and mobile gaming having stores full of literally thousands of free games it is staggering that the Nintendo 3DS remains such a power in the console space.  High quality, fun games clearly still matter to players.
